five eyesTrust us, we’re from the Government. – FBI

If you’re reading this on a computer, there could be someone from one of the “Five Eyes” Nations listening in (U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand).

Not many people fully understand what that means. TechCrunch describes the secret memo aiming for exploitation of your privacy:

… known as the so-called “Five Eyes” group of nations — quietly issued the memo last week demanding that providers “create customized solutions, tailored to their individual system architectures that are capable of meeting lawful access requirements.”

These “customized solutions” allow access to your private encrypted call and message data, including your emails.

And if any provider doesn’t voluntarily create this backdoor into your computer, “Five Eyes” will work together on legislation that forces compliance.

In other words, encryption of your communications is fine, unless it keeps them from looking at your private stuff.

And the Techcrunch report highlighted another disturbing “Five Eyes Mindset”:

Without access, law enforcement has extensively lobbied against companies using end-to-end encryption, claiming it hinders criminal investigations.

So anything that makes it harder for investigators to do their job makes them lobby against it. The U.S. has the 4th Amendment, will they lobby against that too?

Even though efforts by “Five Eyes” have failed so far, who knows how long it will be before your wall of privacy is cracked?

But the creepiness doesn’t stop there…

A Guardian report from the UK (a “Five Eyes” member) highlights the arrogance of their government. They created an appropriately titled “Snooper’s Charter”:

In a surprise move, the government is to introduce an investigatory powers bill far more wide-ranging than expected. The legislation will include not only the expected snooper’s charter, enabling the tracking of everyone’s web and social media use, but also moves to strengthen the security services’ warranted powers for the bulk interception of the content of communications.

This takes the idea of a backdoor into your private communications to another level. All in the name of “national security.”

Bottom line is, backdoors like this aren’t safe because they can give criminals the same access the authorities have into your private life.

Yet “Five Eyes” nations will still try to sell this to their citizens as a way to increase national security.

How much security do you need before you give up all of your privacy?

When any Government cabal says “Trust Us” with your private and encrypted data, do your best to resist. Because if you give them an inch, they will take a mile.

You can count on that.

Bottom line… your private life is quickly becoming an open book that any Government agency or individual with cheap technology can exploit.

With just a few clicks, a phone call, and a few dollars almost everything someone wants to find out about you can quickly be put together into a complete file.

And who knows how some stranger (including federal law enforcement) will use that information? So you need to start protecting your privacy any way you can, right now…
