The US is denying and revoking passports in much greater numbers. The time to get a second passport is now.

passport denied

Imagine how life may be in the U.S. if you couldn’t travel outside of its borders. In any free society, you should be able to travel, well… freely.

But if the Government took away your passport, or denied your passport application, you would be trapped.

So imagine if the Government made it almost impossible to get a passport in the first place. What would you think if you were told, “Your passport has been revoked”?

Whether you couldn’t get a passport, or you had yours revoked, it’s quite likely that images of “prison bars” would begin forming.

Now stop imagining, because this egregious violation of your basic right to travel is already happening…

Starting with 362,000 U.S. citizens, the IRS is now enforcing legislation to revoke passports of people who are delinquent taxpayers. Sovereign Man explains:

Section 32101 of the FAST Act requires the US State Department to revoke or deny the passport of any taxpayer that the IRS deems to have “seriously delinquent tax debt.”

Earlier this month, the IRS acknowledged that they had sent at least 362,000 names to the State Department to start revoking or denying passports.

First, this process is just starting, so there are likely to be hundreds of thousands more names sent to the State Department.

Second, this can affect you even if you aren’t already delinquent paying your taxes. The IRS has suffered data breaches, and makes bureaucratic errors all the time.

What if you paid off a delinquent debt, only to have the IRS take its sweet time processing the payment and deny or revoke your passport?

The IRS uses an antiquated and automated system, is understaffed, and makes errors, so fixing any mistakes can take months, even years. This is mainly because the IRS only communicates through mail, and will never call or email you about errors (for security reasons).

All of this means it’s easier to get on the “passport denial list” at any time, for reasons out of your control.

But the IRS isn’t the only way your travel freedom can be encroached.

Unpaid Taxes Aren’t the Only Way This Can Happen…

You can be denied or have your passport revoked for a number of other reasons in addition to delinquent taxes.

According to an article at USA Today, there is an increasing list of these reasons, including but not limited to:

  1. If you owe too much child support.
  2. Certain misdemeanors involving drugs.
  3. Failure to pay Federal loans (including emergency medical care), or back debt.

Recently, concerns about “citizenship fraud” have led to passports being stripped from people born in the U.S. The LA Times reports:

In some cases, passport applicants with official U.S. birth certificates are being jailed in immigration detention centers and entered into deportation proceedings. In others, they are stuck in Mexico, their passports suddenly revoked when they tried to reenter the United States.

Whether these are legitimate claims of “citizenship fraud” or not, the implications are frightening, and should encourage you to ask questions.

With an ever-growing list of reasons to keep you “land locked” in the U.S., it’s best that you prepare an escape plan before it’s too late.
