The government doesn’t need a warrant or even much of a program to gain access to your private data: they just need to buy it from online brokers.
I regret to inform you that the “blob” of United States spy agencies are at it again.
More accurately, these agencies have probably been at it since the World Wide Web became popular in mainstream culture.
The Snowden Revelations revealed that the NSA was illegally spying on all Americans by leveraging programs like PRISM and XKeyscore.
Those spying programs were challenged in various courts, and found illegal in 2018 (with severely limited exceptions).
But those programs are apparently the tip of a huge iceberg, and it’s quite likely the NSA found a workaround to the legal precedents set in the courts a few years ago.
Here’s how they and the other U.S. spy agencies did that…
It’s incredible the lengths the “Alphabet Blob” will go to, so they can try to monitor everything you do, without a warrant.
According to a piece in the Wall Street Journal, agencies like the CIA have thrown “traditional” intelligence gathering out the window. Now, they’re just buying what they want to know about you from data brokers.
But the scary part is what they’re buying:
“Last November, Michael Morell, a former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, hinted at a big change in how the agency now operates. “The information that is available commercially would kind of knock your socks off,” Morell said in an appearance on the NatSecTech podcast. “If we collected it using traditional intelligence methods, it would be top secret-sensitive. And you wouldn’t put it in a database, you’d keep it in a safe.”
Anyone who tells you “They’re just tracking you so they can sell stuff to you” doesn’t know the half of it!
In fact, most Americans probably don’t even know which data brokers are selling this information to the CIA, NSA, and FBI.
The U.S. Government agencies even tried to withhold a report that revealed the type of data they’re collecting now used to require a warrant and a reason for collecting it:
“Today, in a way that [few] Americans seem to understand, and even fewer of them can avoid,” governments can purchase “information on nearly everyone that is of a type and level of sensitivity that historically could have been obtained, if at all, only through targeted (and predicated) collection.”
These agencies are operating lawlessly, and playing around carelessly, with your most intimate private life.
Some of the data brokers that are selling this information to the CIA, NSA, and other agencies aren’t even known to the general public, according to Senator Wyden:
“Until recently, the data broker industry and the intelligence community’s (IC) purchase of data from these shady companies has existed in a legal gray area, which was in large part due to the secrecy surrounding the practice. App developers and advertising companies did not meaningfully disclose to users their sale and sharing of personal data with data brokers nor seek to obtain informed consent. The data brokers that buy and resell this data are not known to consumers and several of these companies refused to answer questions from Congress regarding the companies they buy data from and the government agencies they sell it to.”
Your private life, location, associations, and other data are being brokered to the world’s worst spy agencies, so those agencies can build a file on you.
