This may have you curious about how to get Singapore citizenship, especially if you want to make a more permanent move. In that case, you should read on, as we’ll show you what you need to do to make it happen.
The Different Types of Eligibility
As you might’ve guessed, there are different paths to citizenship, but essentially, all Singapore citizenship requirements require that you obtain permanent residency first. We’ll discuss each one in more detail below.
Permanent Residents
This is one of the most common routes to citizenship, as it’s available to practically anyone. Basically, you must have been a Singapore permanent resident for at least two years and are over 21 years old.
How do you become a permanent resident? Well, most people get this status through work passes, either the Employment Pass or the S Pass. Expats also use the Professional, Technical Personnel and Skilled Workers Scheme to become permanent residents.
You can also become a permanent resident as a student. To do so, you must have been a resident in the country for over three years and you must hold a residence permit for at least one year. In addition, you have to either be in the Integrated Programme (IP) or pass at least one national exam.
When becoming a permanent resident, you must show a strong commitment to Singapore through the following:
- Stable employment
- Financial contributions
- Integration into Singaporean society
Spouses of Singapore Citizens
Like in most other countries, you can obtain Singapore citizenship by marrying a citizen. You can only apply for citizenship after at least two years of marriage and permanent resident status for at least two years as well.
When applying for permanent residence, you must prove your marriage and shared life in Singapore. You can do this through:
- Joint property ownership
- Shared finances
- Children
Global Investor Programme
The Global Investor Programme (GIP) is a great option for permanent residency if you’re an entrepreneur with a high net worth. Applicants can make an investment and get their permanent residency that way, so this is excellent for those wondering about how to get Singapore citizenship by investment.
The current investment threshold is set at S$2.5 million. This money must be spent on either a new business or expansion of an existing one.

- The company profile
- The impact your investments could have on Singapore’s economy
Documents Required for Application
Let’s say that you’ve gone through one of the pathways listed above, and now you want to apply for your Singapore passport. Here are the documents you’ll need.
Identity Documents
You’ll need your PR identity card (NRIC, or national registration identity card) to apply. You’ll also need a valid passport.
Proof of Permanent Resident Status
Your PR identity card (or re-entry card) isn’t enough as proof of permanent residency. In addition, you should provide confirmation documents.
Birth and Marriage Certificates
You’ll need copies of your birth certificate to prove you’re who you say you are. And if you’re applying based on marriage to a Singapore citizen, you have to provide the marriage certificate and divorce papers if you were previously married.
Educational Certificates and Employment Records
Gather your educational certificates and transcripts from your schools, as well as your skill certificates, professional licenses, and membership certificates.
Plus, you’ll need a letter of employment from your current employer and pay slips from the last six months. If you’re self-employed, you’ll have to provide the latest Business Registration Certificate from the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), as well as the latest 3 years’ balance sheets and profit and loss statements.
Investment Documents
If you’re using the GIP, then you’ll have to provide financial statements. Also, submit business profiles and other records related to the GIP.
Passport Photos
You should take pictures in advance. The photo should have a white background and dimensions of 400 x 514 pixels.
The Application Process
You can apply for your Singapore citizenship through ICA’s MyICA portal. You have to first create an account, and then you can complete the application and upload your documents.
Do note that there’s a S$100 non-refundable processing fee. Expect your application to take 6-12 months to process, as the ICA is very rigorous when reviewing documents. Some applications may even take two years to process.
Interview and Background Assessment
It’s possible that you may be called for an interview to verify your information. The ICA may assess your integration into Singapore’s community and values. Also, they perform background checks regarding employment history, community involvement, and conduct.
Approval and Oath of Allegiance
If you’re approved, you’ll have to renounce any existing citizenship since dual citizenship isn’t allowed in Singapore. Then, you’ll have to pledge allegiance to the country.
After this, you’ll be granted a Singapore citizenship certificate.
Reapplication
If your application is denied, reapplication is allowed. However, we suggest that you appeal instead, as this will save you both time and money. You should submit your appeal letter within six months of the date on your rejection letter.
