Why does it take whistleblowers and the benevolence of billionaires to out the government collusion with Big Tech to suppress speech and information?
In the U.S., this used to mean the government would control what information “gets out” into the mainstream media companies and newspapers.
That strategy wasn’t always effective.
The 1971 release of the Pentagon Papers by Daniel Ellsberg is one example. That release revealed a number of illegal Vietnam War activities by the U.S. Government.
And Governments don’t like to have their dirty laundry aired for the public.
Until that release, the U.S. Government tried to control public perception through television news reports and newspaper articles.
Fast forward to today, and thanks to social media along with other Internet channels like blogs and podcasts information can flow a bit more freely.
But the response to COVID-19 opened the door for the U.S. Government to take back control of the narrative it so dearly wanted to keep in check.
Introducing: The Censorship Industrial Complex
Americans have a First Amendment right to speak their mind. When that right is put into jeopardy, that’s bad enough.
But what I’m going to be describing in this message is something much worse. Almost a direct type of “conditioning,” or narrative control.
Here’s what I mean…
Various U.S. Government agencies were recently caught red-handed trying to leverage people working at social media companies like Twitter to alter the flow of information you can see, hear, and read on the Internet.
Read that again, that’s a textbook definition of fascism.
Put simply, if there was a news article the U.S. Government didn’t want you to see being shared on Twitter; some officials had a direct line to get that information removed.
Of course, we’re not just talking about news articles here. Any information that the U.S. Government didn’t want you to see, it tried to make sure you didn’t see it.
It’s been called the Censorship Industrial Complex, and thanks to Elon Musk’s recent purchase of Twitter, we got to see proof of this fascist behavior firsthand.
Musk decided to reveal everything through a cadre of professional journalists in a huge document dump called The Twitter Files.
Here’s how those journalists described the Complex itself:
We came to think of this grouping – state agencies like DHS, FBI, or the Global Engagement Center (GEC), along with “NGOs that aren’t academic” and an unexpectedly aggressive partner, commercial news media – as the Censorship-Industrial Complex.
[…] Who’s in the Censorship-Industrial Complex? Twitter in 2020 helpfully compiled a list for a working group set up in 2020.
The National Endowment for Democracy, the Atlantic Council’s DFRLab, and Hamilton 68’s creator, the Alliance for Securing Democracy, are key.
What it boils down to is this…
Major U.S. Government agencies, think tanks, and other groups joined together with Twitter and other large media companies in a fascist alliance that tried to make sure you only had access to “approved” information of all types.
For example, if you were using social media to catch a conversation about COVID vaccines, you might not have been getting the whole story. The U.S. Government was making sure you weren’t getting anything it deemed as “misinformation.”
And even worse, they’ve been doing this for years!
No matter how you view vaccines, I’m pretty sure you don’t want a Government institution of any type deciding what vaccine information you have access to.
But this isn’t just about just one topic. This is about any topic where the U.S. Government wants to control the narrative.
Here’s How Big Companies Lock Arms With Big Government to Control What You Read, See, and Hear
There is such a large trove of examples that reveal how various agencies are trying to control the narrative, that I can’t cover them all in this message.
But I have pulled key parts from different sources that describe the incredibly insane depths these agencies will go to, just so you think a certain way.
First, during the 2020 presidential election Facebook and Microsoft worked hard to make sure you voted for Biden:
In August, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg revealed that his company had censored stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop at the request of the FBI just before the 2020 presidential election. Now, because of The Intercept’s report, we read text messages between Microsoft executives and government officials revealing that allegedly neutral internet companies are more than willing to do the government’s dirty work to dismantle information that doesn’t support the Biden administration.
Next, at Stanford University, a massive surveillance operation known as the Virality Project tried to ensure you only saw the “correct” political information:
All were characterized as “potential violations” or disinformation “events” by the Virality Project, a sweeping, cross-platform effort to monitor billions of social media posts by Stanford University, federal agencies, and a slew of (often state-funded) NGOs.
Though the Virality Project reviewed content on a mass scale for Twitter, Google/YouTube, Facebook/Instagram, Medium, TikTok, and Pinterest, it knowingly targeted true material and legitimate political opinion, while often being factually wrong itself.
Take notice of the last part of the quote above, which shows exactly why no one should monitor social media to alter what you are allowed to see, read, or hear.
The result of this madness gave power to a few individuals, who started to focus more on narrative, and even less on the facts they were trying to control:
Government, academia, and an oligopoly of would-be corporate competitors organized quickly behind a secret, unified effort to control political messaging.
[…] It accelerated the evolution of digital censorship, moving it from judging truth/untruth to a new, scarier model, openly focused on political narrative at the expense of fact.
Keep in mind, what you’ve just read only pertains to politics. The Twitter Files also revealed ties to controlling medical information like COVID vaccines, masks, and other health information.
The bottom line is, in the United States only the “company line” is acceptable. A few decades ago, the old USSR called it Pravda.
Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter has made things a little better, but it still makes sense to have a plan to leave the U.S. if you ever need to or if you simply choose to because of increasing restrictions on free speech.
